Recollections: A good friend of USNTPS brought his Fouga Magister to the school for Qualitative Evaluations (Qual Evals) in the summer of 2001. I was lucky enough to get to fly with him. The Magister was “old school” and it was a unique opportunity to get to fly a jet from the 1950’s. Dave–who has owned and extensively flown a number of older jets including MiGs–was a pleasure to fly with. He has been a fixture at Test Pilot Schools on both coasts.

This was a very memorable flight as it was the first one done by me at Pax River, where Bob gave me my local area orientation flight in the Fouga. That was the first flight that led into 18 years of flying there. And is one of the most memorable flights I’ve ever made! I’m honored that Bob was able to do that for me, and very pleased to see this old airplane in his list, one of which he should be very proud.
I’d forgotten that was your FIRST visit, and it was the checkout flight. You were (are) a pro, the kind of pilot (and plane) that we encouraged (needed) at TPS. Not everyone was allowed to stay and fly with the students.
